Welsh Christians in Western Australia
One of the most outstanding features of early Welsh migrants in Australia was their desire to continue celebrating their Christian faith in the language of their forebears. The Welsh language is of Celtic origin and is spoken natively in Wales and in "Y Wladfa" (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina).
In 1898, some seventy years after the establishment of the first British colony in Western Australia, the West Australian Newspaper reported that a St. David's day service, conducted by the Archdeacon J Howell Griffiths, Rector of Albany, was held at the Anglican Cathedral in Perth when the singing was led by a Welsh male voice choir. Even though, in those early days, there was no established Welsh church in WA. Archdeacon Griffiths preached in Welsh whenever the opportunity arose, and it is recorded that in 1890 a congregation of some 80 Welsh men and women listened to him preaching in Welsh at the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie.
Shortly after, in 1904 the Welsh Free Church was established in Perth and, currently, still operates a monthly service at Wesley Uniting Church, at the corner of William Street and Hay Street, Perth. It also organises an extremely popular "Gymanfa Ganu' (Welsh Hymn Singing Festival) in partnership with the Perth Male Voice Choir on the fourth Sunday in August
